For more than twenty years, Dr. Kanefield has counseled, evaluated, and helped individuals and couples working with issues surrounding assisted reproduction, pregnancy and loss. She has evaluated scores of women who wish to become surrogate mothers (gestational carriers) and egg donors (ovum donors, donor oocyte).
Dr. Kanefield graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, received her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and completed her internship at St. Elizabeths Hospital. She has had teaching and clinical appointments at the American University Center for Psychological Services, the Clinical Social Work Institute, the Washington School of Psychiatry, the Georgetown University Counseling Center, the George Washington University School of Professional Psychology, and the George Washington University School of Medicine.
Dr. Kanefield has published articles on female development, balancing work and family, the psychotherapeutic process, and surrogacy. Dr. Kanefield maintains a private practice in consultation and evaluation, psychotherapy, and psychoanalysis in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
